Building Schools for the Future (BSF) is a £45bn, 15-year programme, the largest single capital investment programme for 50 years. It began in 2004 and is now being rolled out nationally.

VT Group is uniquely positioned to take a leading role in BSF, with considerable capabilities in education and ICT. Our approach is to ensure that transformation of education drives the programme, rather than simply the provision of new facilities.
A winning approach
Our education-led approach has been well received and has resulted in VT Group securing significant BSF contracts:
London Borough of Greenwich
In this pathfinder programme, VT Group was selected to become the Strategic Partnering Organisation (SPO), a variant model to the LEP. In partnership with Arup, we manage the delivery of the BSF programme ranging from the selection of construction, information and communications technology (ICT) and facilities management providers, through to ongoing service delivery. We provide project management, ICT and educational expertise to ensure the programme is kept on time and to budget – and to ensure education transformation remains its focus.
London Borough of Lewisham
VT partnered with the construction company Costain to form Learning21 – the only BSF consortium in which the design, construction, ICT and FM services are led by an education company. The joint venture, Learning21 successfully secured the contract to form a LEP with the London Borough of Lewisham to deliver a £210m pathfinder programme to rebuild and refurbish all of the borough's seventeen secondary and special schools. Work began in 2007, with the construction of the first two schools (scheduled for completion in 2009) and the rollout of ICT provision across the whole secondary school estate.

The future
Our direct experience in BSF, coupled with our considerable education, ICT and visioning expertise, has demonstrated that we are well placed to deliver specialist services within BSF. We provide consultancy to local authorities to enable effective preparation and delivery of BSF. We also provide education and ICT expertise to construction companies on both a consultancy basis and as a key service supplier
