Babcock is a leading provider of approved dosimetry services to
the UK nuclear industry, covering an extensive range of personal
dosimetry requirements.
Berkeley Approved Dosimetry Service
- PDS (Personal Dosimetry Service)
- CDRS (Central Dose Record Service)
UK legislation (The Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999)
requires that dosimetry services for classified radiation workers
are formally approved by the Health and Safety Executive. Dosimetry
Services can only call themselves an ADS if formally approved. The
Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information)
Regulations 2001 (REPPIR) require that any ADS providing services
to be used for emergency exposures, eg for nuclear installations'
emergency plans, must have additional approval from the Health and
Safety Executive.
The Berkeley Approved Dosimetry Service, now part of Babcock,
has been a leading provider to the UK nuclear industry for the past
50 years. The Berkeley ADS is approved for both IRR99 and REPPIR
and has been a working member of the European Radiation Dosimetry
Group (known as EURADOS) since 1986. The Berkeley ADS is currently
organising the EURADOS 2010 intercomparison for whole body
dosemeters under contract to EURADOS.
The Berkeley ADS is the world leader in the use of electronic
dosemeters (EPDs) for legal Dosimetry and it is still the only
significant service in the world to have government approval to use
non-passive devices for legal dosimetry with the first site,
Oldbury Power Station in Gloucestershire, going legal with EPDs
over 10 years ago. CDRS also runs an integrated network in the UK
for personal dosimetry and dose records providing on-line services
for all British Energy and Magnox Power Stations, Devonport Royal
Dockyard Limited and a substantial number of nuclear
contractors.
The Berkeley ADS can supply passive dosimetry for whole body,
extremity, neutron and environmental requirements and a full range
of internal dosimetry services can also be provided.
CDRS is one of the largest dose record keeping services in
Europe with data currently held for 132,000 persons. CDRS provides
essential client support including Site Licence 18 compliance
monitoring (for doses to specified groups of workers), monthly and
annual dose statistics for the British Energy and Magnox Annual
Company Reports, investigations and information for the
Compensation Scheme for Radiation Linked Diseases and annual
returns to the Health Protection Agency for the National Registry
for Radiation Workers (NRRW). CDRS also maintains the epidemiology
database EUCLID (Epidemiology Unit Compilation of Life Information
and Dose) which contains historical dose record information for all
CEGB licensed sites from site commissioning up to 1985.
