As the parent body organisation responsible for the management
of the decommissioning programmes at Dounreay, Harwell and Winfrith
on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Babcock has
real experience of managing and operating nuclear sites
successfully and safely.
Extraordinary progress has been made in restoring our former
civil nuclear sites, utilising innovative technical solutions and
decommissioning some facilities that were once thought too
difficult. The numerous achievements over the past few years
include:
- 15% area reduction of the RSRL secure site (Harwell).
- Demolition of the UK's first nuclear fuel plant
(Winfrith).
- 5,000th waste canister processed through the Head End Cells
(Harwell).
- Babcock has destroyed more than half of the 57,000 litres of
liquid metal used as a coolant (Dounreay).
Babcock is also the site licensee and Tier 1 management
contractor/owner of the Royal Navy's nuclear facilities at
Devonport, Rosyth and Faslane.
