Babcock secures environmental monitoring contract

Babcock has secured a competitively won contract to supply environmental monitoring services to the Harwell and Winfrith nuclear licensed sites.

Under the three-year contract, with two one-year extension options, Babcock's Nuclear Environmental Laboratory (based at the Westlakes Science and Technology Park near Whitehaven, Cumbria) will be providing services to ensure that Research Sites Restoration Ltd (RSRL) complies with the regulatory requirements laid down by the Environment Agency for the operation of the sites.

Babcock is responsible for the collection of a variety of sample types from the environment on and around the Harwell and Winfrith sites and their transportation to the company's environmental laboratory at Westlakes, where the samples will be analysed for the presence of radionuclides. Sample types include soil, vegetation, milk, fish, rainwater, river water, low level liquid effluents, and high volume air samples.

In securing this contract, Babcock's environmental laboratory team is building on proven expertise in the field.
